My Zen View and Haiku - Stem Cell Research? - February 20, 2010

From a Zen Buddhist perspective, the issue is not one of supporting or criticizing stem cell research. If we support it, we may become angry with those who oppose it, and if we are against it, we may become angry with those who support it. Either way, we are externalizing the issue and will demonize the other side. This causes separateness and suffering.

Worrying about our life span is to not live in the present. As the phrase goes, "Life has a 100 percent mortality rate." We will either die young or old or somewhere in between. Rather than seek ways to extend life, live in the present moment and serve others wherever they are in their own life's journey.

A budding flower
Blossoms or withers away.
It is all perfect.
