My Zen View and Haiku - Women and Gays? - August 21, 2010

Zen Buddhism is not a hierarchical club where some are allowed in or kept out based on gender or sexual orientation. In the Soto Zen tradition, there are women ordained as nuns and Zen priests. Women can hold leadership roles and manage abbeys. As for homosexuals, some Buddhist orders prohibit ordination as a monk and some do not, but none reject homosexuals as laypersons. The key concept is to avoid sexual misconduct, and homosexuality is not considered misconduct for a layperson.

Zen Buddhism emphasizes seated meditation as a way to examine reality and the twin causes of suffering — aversion and attraction — and to engage in compassionate activities to relieve the suffering of others. Zazen and Zen practices are open to anyone.

Rain nourishes all.
Externals do not matter.
Do you serve others?
