My Zen View and Haiku - Zen Buddhist Dress Codes - October 30, 2010

Zen monks and nuns will wear the robes traditional with their order, usually with subdued colors and minimal adornment. During a dharma teaching or retreat, lay Zen Buddhists are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes that are respectful and not wear clothing with printed sayings or pictures.

Generally, though, there are no rigid codes and no one is turned away if their clothes are not suitable. Compassion includes honoring the circumstances of those who wish to attend teachings or receive services from the Sangha (community of practitioners).

Like a fall meadow,
All adornment is perfect.
In meditation.
