My Zen View and Haiku - Religious National Holidays? - December 11, 2010

As a Zen Buddhist I honor and respect other faith traditions and will always encourage acts of compassion and peace-making regardless of one’s faith. If the recognition of a holy day helps remind people of the humanity we all share, then that is good. Honoring Jesus is wonderful and so would be the honoring of Buddha or anyone who expresses unconditional love and peace.

However, we don’t really need a special day because every moment is a glorious gift of enlightenment when we become aware of our breathing, the sun coming up, the love of dear one, and the recognition of the divinity in all things. Whether or not the current government wishes to to make it a holiday is really quite irrelevant.

Today is holy.
Tomorrow and yesterday
Are holy also.
