My Zen View and Haiku - Condemning a Sinner? - January 22, 2011

According to Reverend Lovejoy of The Simpsons’ fame, “Everything’s a sin.” Some faith traditions view marrying one not of your faith a sin. For some, dancing is a sin, drinking alcohol a sin, and so on. The danger, here, is that the condemning of the offender is often based on judgment and revenge, instead of healing.

Rather than labeling an action a sin, Zen Buddhists identify behaviors as skillful or unskillful and examine what the impact will be on karma. A sex offender certainly committed an unskillful act that will have serious repercussions on his current and future lives. By having the focus on skillful or unskillful the issue can be addressed and the offender given the opportunity to make amends or to be removed from society pursuant to its laws. Hopefully, skillful actions will follow.

Judging another
Only proves your need to judge.
Help ease suffering.
