There is a classic M*A*S*H episode where the 4077th can’t get a needed incubator even though the supply officer has three in storage. The supply officer logically states that if he gave them one incubator he would only have two and two isn’t as good as three.
Too often, wealthy nations and individuals behave like this officer: I have far more than I need (food, money, housing), but I can’t share, despite your suffering, because then I’d have less. America is very good at sharing, but we could do more. Perhaps a simple shift in attitude is all it takes. If the country or the individual would view their wealth as a source of happiness, then they may be more willing to share. As the Buddha said, “Happiness is never decreased by being shared.”
If I share with you,
We can all have happiness.
To you, Namaste.
