My Zen View and Haiku - On God's Favorites - April 16, 2011

“Buddha’s Favorite” is a fine sushi restaurant in Newport Beach and “God’s Favorite” is a play by Neil Simon. To assume one is especially favored by a deity and blessed with material wealth or have an easier life than others is both illogical and arrogant. If someone has an easier life or is seemingly in better circumstances it can be random chance or hard work, but it does not signify a special relationship with a God.

For a Zen Buddhist, all beings from worms to great whales and humans have merit and inherent worth. A songbird outside my window is of inestimable value and has an equal right to exist as the most wealthy and famous person. Rather than asserting a smug special-ness, a better attitude is humble compassion and service to all.

Creation exists
And we are all part of it,
Equally special.
