Being truly aware is being enlightened.

For a Zen Buddhist there are the small and daily enlightenments of awareness. These are the moments we catch an angry thought before we utter it, we feel the pain of others and rather than recoil we feel it too and try to help if possible, and where simply being aware free us from the auto-pilot of existence.

Enlightenment is not suddenly ‘getting it’ and graduating to a superior level where ego tells us we’re special. True enlightenment is simply being aware, truly aware, of this glorious existence and how we are all inter-related. If a driver cuts you off and you wish them peace, if you get a fatal diagnosis your focus is on the beauties of life, if you help someone who is hurting, then you are aware and enlightened.

The moon winked at me
Through rain clouds of winter.
How fragrant the night.
