We evaluate our place in the world by comparison. We believe we have more than the poor and homeless because we are special or made better choices. We may throw a few dollars toward someone while feeling smugly pleased at our generosity. Conversely, we suffer when we see the rich and feel deprived because we deserve more. These are false attachments as we've all been poor and we've had far more than we need.
When we realize that we are not separate from the poor or the homeless, we are able to help with pure intention. We are not better or unique from them because of our income or our housing. They are souls, like us, who may need help. We should love them as our family and treat them as dear friends.
The concrete is cold
And a gentle hand is warmth.
Give because you love.
