My Zen View and Haiku - Are We Better Off Today Than 50 Years Ago? - March 27, 2010

What a curious question! The world of 50 years ago does not exist and any perception of what it may have been like is completely filtered by one's attitudes and beliefs. For me, the world was wonderful in 1960. I was 7 years old, had gone to Disneyland, learned to swim and was enjoying second grade. About that same time, though, a relative of mine was a victim of abuse and the world was decidedly not wonderful for her. It was frightening and traumatic.

For a suburban household, 1960 had barbecues and upward mobility. An inner city inhabitant had rampant discrimination and suffering. Whether it was pleasant or not, to live in the past is to deny the present. Now is all you have.

A spring petal falls
And it is already gone.
You only live now.
