My Zen View and Haiku - Forgiveness - October 9, 2010

Always forgive your enemies – nothing annoys them so much.” Most of us can agree with poet and dramatist Oscar Wilde’s trenchant comment. We like the subtle and emotionally pleasing aspect of ‘revenge’ that the comment infers, even if it is only in our thoughts and not really forgiveness. If you forgive yourself or other because it makes you feel noble and righteous it is as wrong as hatred and anger: it still places the focus outside when the real work of forgiveness is within.

Forgiveness is a healing gift you give yourself. You acknowledge you caused suffering to others or yourself, you do what you can to rectify the matter if possible, and you recommit to living a compassionate life with the true goal of reducing suffering in the world.

Dear one, I’m sorry.
I will practice forgiveness.
To heal you and me.
