A core concept in Zen Buddhism is the folly of being attached to things. It is the realization that if we link our happiness or peace of mind to an item or a belief we will suffer if that item or belief is gone. Enjoying money or a fine car or any external item is certainly fine. However, we often become so attached to whatever it is that its loss, or even the fear of its loss, brings us suffering.
If we learn equanimity and thoroughly enjoy the beauties of what life gives us and, with graceful dignity, endure the painful aspects of life, then we are not violently tossed around by the joys and vicissitudes of existence. Money is like an alms bowl: necessary in this world but it certainly doesn’t define you.
Wealth or poverty.
We accept what is with a
Bow and grateful smile.
