My Zen View and Haiku - Regarding Organ Donation - April 2, 2011

For Zen Buddhists, the gift of organs after death can be a wonderful expression of generosity and compassion. The now-dead donor doesn’t need the organ and it can be of life-saving value to the recipient. In Zen, there are no restrictions or demands regarding donating or receiving an organ. It is understood that it is an intensely personal decision and the wishes of both the donor and recipient should be honored, if possible.

For a Zennist, the giving of an organ is a relatively easy choice. However, receiving an organ is often a matter requiring deep meditation. If someone else could benefit from the organ, then the Zennist would defer and allow another to receive the organ. If we can extend another’s life it would have merit.

As you exit life,
Ease another’s suffering.
Donate an organ.
