My Zen View and Haiku - Nationalized Health Care? - March 20, 2010

During the Vietnam War there was a farmer who, while working in fields, reached down to pull some grass and suddenly stood up with a poisonous snake latched onto his hand. His family killed the snake and the farmer sat down, said goodbye to his family, and died.

It is often stated that America has the best health care in the world. But if you cannot access that health care, then all the latest technology and highly skilled specialists are of no use - you might as well sit down and die. Rather than polarized and angry debates about corporate greed or socialized medicine, perhaps a compassionate consensus could be reached where reasonable health services - preventive care and basic procedures - are universal and highly specialized services - transplants and high-tech machines - are optional.

A darkening night
Comes for all of us in time.
Serve others today.
