My Zen View and Haiku - Sin and Karma - March 13, 2010

"It is better to beg forgiveness than ask permission" is a common phrase that speaks volumes about human behavior. The concept here is that we'll listen to the ego's siren song and do whatever we can rationalize - which are, of course, simply "rational lies" - and hope that we won't get caught. And if we do, we can beg forgiveness to minimize the harm coming our way, or so we hope.

Sin or karma could be significant in controlling behavior, but it doesn't for the reason we believe that our actions are justifiable on this particular issue and our ego assures us that it is our right to behave in a way we know at a deeper level is wrong. In seated meditation, the ego lays bare its duplicity and we can see the pain it can cause.

Embracing ego
Is vandalizing the soul.
Suffering follows.
